As a kid, I used to think squids were the same as octopuses. I thought they were baby octopuses. Squids and octopuses belong to the same family, but they are different.
Some call it kanava, some call it koonthal, and some call it calamari, but if you are able to cook the squid perfectly, then you are a great chef.
Cooking squid
Cooking in a frying pan over high flame can take 3 minutes for squid /calamari to cook.
Cooking in a frying pan over medium flame can take 5 to 7 minutes to cook.
Sometimes squid is pressure cooked, making the cooking time 30 minutes.
The cooking time is either less than 5 minutes or more than 30 minutes.
The chances of squid getting rubbery or undercooked are higher if you are cooking them for the first time
Ingredients
250 gms Squid( Cleaned and cut into rings)
50 gms Butter
10 to 12 Garlic cloves
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp Black pepper powder
Salt to taste (½ tsp)
½ tsp crushed Red Chilli (optional)
Method*
1. Clean the squid and cut them into rings. Add salt to the squid and keep it aside.
2. Take a pan, add butter over a low flame, once the butter melts, add crushed garlic and sauté lightly.
3. Add the squid at this stage and stir well. Cook for 3 minutes in a medium flame with lids closed.
4. Add pepper powder and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes over a medium flame.
5. Add chopped coriander leaves once the cooking is done.
